I’m pondering what it would take to convert a Citroen SM from automatic to manual.

Wait what? Am I missing something? Why not just get one of these?

Local to me and low price, that’s why:

The next least-expensive ones are 3x the cost (but they are manual)

IMO I would just buy it and drive it as much as possible...an SM couldn’t be bad either way, could it?

You are a hero simply for considering this, but why not stick with the Automatic? It suits the characteristics of a big Citroën quite well. And you don’t have to spend ages and money looking for a good transmission.

True, and I can spruce it up, clean it up, sell it, and then get the manual at a later date.

BTW does the car have a full service history by a specialist? Does it have an improved aftermarket timing chain and chain tensioners?

Who knows; trying to get my francophone co-workers to get in touch with them. But I can do that stuff myself (upgrade the parts.)

If it doesn’t have any of those, stay away, especially at that mileage.

What do you need? A donor manual SM, that’s what.

To answer the question, clutch, bellhousing, pedal box, lever, various cables and linkages and whatever else I haven’t thought of.

If the automatic box is working, stick with it.
